Talking about your weekend is one of the most common topics in English conversation.

You will use it in many real situations:

  • At work on Monday morning — a colleague asks, “How was your weekend?”
  • In English class — your teacher or classmate wants to know what you did
  • With a new friend — you want to get to know each other
  • At a café or social event — you make small talk with someone you just met
  • During a video call — you warm up with a little chat before getting to business

You do not need complicated English. A few short, clear sentences are enough.

2. Core Language Pattern / 基本の型

Use this simple 3-part structure for any weekend answer:

  1. What you did — the main activity
  2. When you did it — Saturday, Sunday, or “on the weekend”
  3. How it was — one feeling word is enough

The template / テンプレート

I __________ on the weekend.
On Saturday, I __________.
On Sunday, I __________.
It was __________.

How each part works / 各パーツの説明

Part 1 — What you did: Use a simple past tense verb. “I went…”, “I watched…”, “I visited…”

Part 2 — When: “On Saturday”, “On Sunday”, or “on the weekend” all work. Adding when makes your answer clearer.

Part 3 — How it was: One adjective is enough. “It was fun.” “It was relaxing.” “It was great.”

日本語

週末の話には、この3つのパーツを使います:

  1. 何をしたか — メインの行動
  2. いつしたか — 土曜、日曜、または「週末に」
  3. どうだったか — 感想を一言

パーツの説明:

パーツ1(何をしたか):過去形の動詞を使います。「I went(行きました)」「I watched(見ました)」「I visited(訪れました)」

パーツ2(いつ):「On Saturday(土曜日に)」「On Sunday(日曜日に)」「on the weekend(週末に)」のどれでも使えます。いつかを言うと、話がより分かりやすくなります。

パーツ3(どうだったか):形容詞を一つ使えば十分です。「It was fun.(楽しかったです)」「It was relaxing.(リラックスできました)」「It was great.(最高でした)」

You: I usually relax. Last weekend I read a book here and listened to music. It was really enjoyable.
Maria: That sounds lovely. Do you always come alone?
You: Sometimes. But last Saturday I came with my sister. We had coffee and talked for a long time.
Maria: That’s so nice. I usually go shopping on weekends. What kind of books do you like?
You: I like stories — novels. I’m reading one about travel right now. What about you — do you have a favourite thing to do on weekends?

6. Naturalness Tips / 自然に聞こえるコツ

What makes answers sound natural / 自然に聞こえるポイント

  • Add one detail after your main activity. “I went to the park — it was really nice.” is better than just “I went to the park.”
  • Use “and” to connect two activities. “I went shopping and met a friend.”
  • End with a feeling word. “It was fun.” / “I really enjoyed it.”
  • Ask the other person a question at the end. This keeps the conversation going.

What sounds unnatural / 不自然に聞こえる例

  • ❌ “On Saturday I executed a leisure programme at the park.” → Too formal. Nobody talks like this.
  • ❌ “I did many things.” → Too vague. Give one or two specific examples.
  • ❌ “I went to the park and then I went to the shop and then I went home and then I cooked.” → Too many “and then”s. Break it into shorter sentences.

How to extend a short answer / 短い答えを広げる方法

Short: “I went to the park.”

Better: “I went to the park on Saturday. It was sunny and really nice.”

Even better: “I went to the park on Saturday with my friend. We walked for about an hour. It was sunny and really relaxing. I’d like to go again.”

日本語

  • メインの行動のあとに、一つ詳細を加えましょう。「公園に行きました」より「公園に行きました。とても良かったです」のほうが自然です。
  • “and”を使って2つの行動をつなぎましょう。「買い物に行って、友だちに会いました。」
  • 最後に感想の言葉を入れましょう。「It was fun.(楽しかったです)」「I really enjoyed it.(とても楽しめました)」
  • 最後に相手に質問すると、会話が続きます。

不自然な例:

  • ❌ かたすぎる表現や難しい単語は使わない。
  • ❌ “I did many things.”のように曖昧すぎる答えは避ける。具体的な例を1〜2つ言いましょう。
  • ❌ “and then”を何度も続けない。短い文に分けましょう。

短い答えを広げる方法:
「公園に行きました」→「土曜日に友だちと公園に行きました。1時間ほど歩いて、晴れていてとてもリラックスできました。また行きたいです。」

7. What to Avoid / 避けたほうがいいこと

Mistake 1: Saying “I did many things” without details

❌ “I did many things on the weekend.”
✅ “I went shopping on Saturday and visited my family on Sunday.”

Give one or two specific activities. Vague answers are hard to continue.

Mistake 2: Forgetting time words

❌ “I went to the park. I went to the café. I met my friend.”
✅ “On Saturday morning I went to the park. In the afternoon I went to a café with my friend.”

“On Saturday”, “in the morning”, “in the afternoon” help your listener follow the story.

Mistake 3: Using only present tense

❌ “I go to the park and I eat lunch.”
✅ “I went to the park and I had lunch there.”

Talking about the weekend means talking about the past. Use past tense: went, had, watched, cooked.

Mistake 4: Never asking the other person

❌ Talking only about yourself and then going quiet.
✅ “That was my weekend! What about you — what did you do?”

A conversation is two-way. A simple question at the end shows interest and keeps things going.

Mistake 5: Trying to say everything

❌ “On Saturday morning I woke up at 7am and then I had breakfast and then I went shopping and then I came home and then I cooked lunch and then…”
✅ “On Saturday I went shopping and cooked dinner at home. It was a nice, relaxing day.”

Pick the highlights. Two or three activities are enough.

日本語

  • 間違い1:「色々しました」と言うだけでなく、具体的な活動を1〜2つ言いましょう。
  • 間違い2:「土曜日に」「午前中に」などの時間の言葉を忘れずに入れましょう。話が分かりやすくなります。
  • 間違い3:週末の話は過去のことなので、過去形を使いましょう。go → went、have → had、watch → watched、cook → cooked。
  • 間違い4:自分のことだけ話して終わらず、最後に相手にも質問しましょう。「What about you?(あなたは?)」でOKです。
  • 間違い5:全部話そうとしなくていいです。ハイライトを2〜3個選んで話しましょう。

8. Practice Template / 練習用テンプレート

Fill in the blanks with your own weekend. Then say it out loud.

Worked Example 2 — Busy weekend / 忙しかった週末

I had a busy weekend.
On Saturday, I went shopping in the city center.
I went with my friend Yuki.
On Sunday, I visited my family.
It was really fun.
What about you — how was your weekend?

Worked Example 3 — Quiet weekend at home / 家でゆっくりした週末

On Saturday, I cleaned my room and cooked dinner.
I stayed home by myself.
On Sunday, I watched movies.
It was really relaxing.
What about you — how was your weekend?

日本語

空欄に自分の週末を入れて、声に出して練習しましょう。

____な週末でした。
土曜日は____しました。
____と一緒に行きました。[または:一人で行きました。]
日曜日は____しました。
とても____でした。
あなたはどうでしたか?

Final Tip / 最後のコツ

Talking about your weekend does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be clear and friendly.

Remember these three things:

  1. Say what you did. (activities)
  2. Say when. (time words)
  3. Say how it was. (feeling word)

That is enough. Start simple, and get more natural over time.

A few short sentences can tell people a lot about how you spent your time.

日本語

週末の話は、完璧でなくていいです。はっきり、友好的に話すことが大切です。

この3つを覚えましょう:

  1. 何をしたか(行動)
  2. いつか(時間の言葉)
  3. どうだったか(感想の言葉)

それだけで十分です。最初はシンプルに始めて、少しずつ自然に話せるようになりましょう。

短い文でも、自分の時間の過ごし方をしっかり伝えられます。
