1. Introduction / はじめに

Talking about your hobbies is one of the most useful conversation skills in English. A hobby is something you enjoy doing in your free time. When you talk about your hobbies, people learn something personal about you. This makes conversation feel warm and friendly.

You do not need complicated English. A few simple, honest sentences are enough. People do not want a long speech — they just want to know you a little better.

Where and when can you use this? / どんな場面で使える?

  • 01 Meeting new people — at a party, a community event, or on a trip. Someone asks “So, what do you like to do?” — now you know exactly what to say.
    初対面の場面 — パーティー、イベント、旅行先など。「趣味は何ですか?」と聞かれたとき。
  • 02 At work or in a business setting — small talk with a colleague or a client often starts with hobbies. It breaks the ice before a meeting.
    職場やビジネスの場 — 同僚やクライアントとの雑談で、会議前の緊張をほぐすのに役立ちます。
  • 03 In a class or study group — teachers often ask students to introduce themselves. Sharing a hobby makes your introduction memorable.
    授業や勉強グループで — 自己紹介のとき、趣味を話すと印象に残りやすくなります。
  • 04 While traveling abroad — on a flight, in a hostel, or at a café, travelers love to chat. Hobbies are the perfect safe topic.
    海外旅行中 — 飛行機、ホステル、カフェなどで旅行者同士が話すとき、趣味はとても話しやすいテーマです。
  • 05 On a job interview — “Tell me about yourself” often includes hobbies. It shows your personality outside of work.
    就職面接で — 「自己紹介をしてください」という質問に、趣味を含めると個性が伝わります。
  • 06 On a first date or social outing — hobbies are a relaxed, positive topic that helps two people connect naturally.
    初デートや友人との外出 — 趣味の話はリラックスした雰囲気を作り、自然に距離を縮めてくれます。
  • 07 In online or in-person English conversations — language exchange partners almost always ask about hobbies first.
    英会話の練習 — 言語交換パートナーや英会話教室でも、趣味の質問はよく出ます。

Why does this matter? / なぜ大切なのか

When you can talk about your hobbies confidently, you will feel more relaxed in English conversations. You will sound friendly and open. Other people will want to keep talking with you. This one skill can open many doors.

2. Core Language Pattern / 基本の文型

Use these three sentences as your foundation. They work in almost every situation. Once you learn this pattern, you can talk about any hobby.

I like           .

I do it           .

I enjoy it because           .

What does each part mean? / 各パーツの意味

  • “I like ___” — This names your hobby. You can also say I enjoy or I love to show how much you like it. “love” > “enjoy” > “like” in strength.
  • “I do it ___” — This explains how often or when. Use words like every day, on weekends, or in my free time.
  • “I enjoy it because ___” — This gives your reason. It makes your answer personal and interesting. It invites the other person to ask more questions.

You can also extend the pattern with a fourth sentence that invites conversation:

Do you have any hobbies?

(趣味はありますか? → 相手にも話を振るひと言)

Kenji So, what do you like to do on the weekends? Do you have any hobbies?
You Yeah! My main hobby is photography. I’ve been into it for about two years now. I usually go out on Sunday mornings to take photos of the city.
Kenji That’s cool! What kind of photos do you take? Like, buildings and streets?
You Mostly, yeah. I love finding interesting light and shadows in everyday places. It helps me see things differently, you know? It’s also a great way to clear my head before the week starts.
Kenji I know what you mean. Do you post your photos anywhere? Like Instagram?
You Sometimes, but I mostly just keep them for myself. What about you? Do you have any hobbies?
Kenji I play guitar. Just at home though — I’m not good enough to play for anyone yet! Ha.
You That’s awesome! How long have you been playing?

Conversation 2: At the office with a colleague

Setting: Monday morning at work. Your colleague Sarah sees you looking relaxed and asks what you did over the weekend.

OFFICE — MONDAY MORNING / オフィス・月曜の朝
Sarah You look refreshed today! Good weekend?
You Yeah, it was great, thanks. I went hiking on Saturday. It’s kind of my weekend ritual now.
Sarah Oh, you’re a hiker? Where do you usually go?
You There’s a great trail about forty minutes from here. I go a few times a month. It’s so peaceful — I love being away from my phone for a few hours. It helps with stress a lot.
Sarah That sounds amazing. I’ve been meaning to try hiking. Is it hard for beginners?
You Not at all! You just need good shoes and some water. The trail I go to is pretty easy. Maybe you should join me sometime!
Sarah I might take you up on that! That would be fun.
You Definitely. Let’s pick a weekend before the rainy season starts!
日本語訳 (Japanese Summary & Translation) サラ:「今日は元気そうですね!良い週末でしたか?」
あなた:「はい、最高でした。土曜日にハイキングに行きました。今では週末の習慣みたいなものです。」

AIRPLANE — INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT / 飛行機・国際線
Tom Long flight, huh. Are you travelling for work or just for fun?
You Just for fun! I love travelling. Honestly, it’s my biggest hobby. I try to visit one new country every year.
Tom One a year — that’s impressive. What do you usually do when you travel? Beach? Cities?
You I prefer cities, actually. I like exploring local markets, trying street food, and just walking around. I don’t plan too much. I enjoy it because you find the most unexpected things that way.
Tom Ha, I’m the opposite — I plan everything! What’s your favourite place you’ve been?
You Probably Portugal. The food was incredible and the people were so friendly. I felt really welcome. Where are you headed today?
Tom I’m going to a conference in London. Work, unfortunately. But maybe I’ll manage to explore a bit while I’m there.
You London is great! You should definitely check out the food markets. Borough Market is amazing.

6. Naturalness Tips / 自然に聞こえるコツ

The difference between a textbook answer and a natural answer is often small. Here is how to close that gap.

Tip 1: Give a reason — 理由を言う

A short answer is okay, but a reason makes it real. Compare:

❌ Not natural I like cooking. I cook on weekends.
✓ More natural I like cooking. I usually cook on weekends — it’s a great way to decompress. I find it really meditative.

Tip 2: Use softening words — やわらかくする言葉を使う

Native speakers often use words like kind of, sort of, I guess, and you know to sound relaxed and friendly, not stiff.

❌ Too stiff My hobby is reading novels. I read every night.
✓ More natural I’m kind of a bookworm, I guess. I read a bit every night — mostly novels.

Tip 3: Ask back — 相手に聞き返す

After talking about yourself, always ask the other person. This shows you are interested in them, not just talking about yourself.

After your answer, always add: “What about you? Do you have any hobbies?” or “Are you into anything like that?”
自分の話のあとには、必ず “What about you?” を付けましょう。相手に興味があることを示す大切な一言です。

Tip 4: Extend with a memory or example — 具体例や記憶で広げる

Instead of a general statement, add a small specific detail. This is what makes conversation interesting.

❌ Too general I like traveling. I travel in my free time.
✓ More natural I love travelling. Actually, I just got back from Portugal last month — it was incredible. I’m already planning my next trip.

7. What to Avoid / よくある間違いと直し方

Here are four common mistakes that Japanese beginners make when talking about hobbies in English, and how to fix them.

Mistake 01 — Translating too literally from Japanese / 日本語をそのまま直訳する
❌ Incorrect“My hobby is reading books.” (sounds stiff — nobody talks like this)
✓ Natural“I love reading.” / “I’m really into reading lately.”

「私の趣味は読書です」を直訳した “My hobby is reading books” は正しいですが、ネイティブは普通こう言いません。”I love reading” や “I’m into reading” の方がずっと自然です。

Mistake 02 — Stopping after one sentence / 一文で止まってしまう
❌ Too short“I like cooking.” (then silence)
✓ Better“I like cooking. I usually make dinner on weekends — I find it relaxing. What about you?”

一文で止まると、会話が途切れてしまいます。理由や頻度を加えてから、相手に話を振りましょう。

Mistake 03 — Using “enjoy” incorrectly / “enjoy” の使い方ミス
❌ Incorrect grammar“I enjoy to cook.” / “I enjoy cook.”
✓ Correct grammar“I enjoy cooking.” (enjoy + -ing form, always)

“enjoy” のあとは必ず動詞の -ing 形(動名詞)を使います。”enjoy to cook” は間違いです。”I enjoy cooking / reading / traveling” のように覚えましょう。

Mistake 04 — Saying “I have no hobby” / 「趣味がない」と言ってしまう
❌ Awkward“I have no hobby.” / “I don’t have hobbies.”
✓ Natural alternatives“I don’t really have a specific hobby, but I like watching Netflix in my free time.” / “I enjoy just relaxing at home and cooking.”

「趣味がない」という人でも、必ず何か自由な時間にしていることがあります。それを話しましょう。「趣味がない」とだけ言うと、会話が止まってしまいます。

Mistake 05 — Forgetting to ask back / 相手に聞き返すのを忘れる
❌ One-sidedTalking for a long time about your hobbies and never asking the other person anything.
✓ NaturalAfter 2–3 sentences about yourself, say: “What about you? What do you like to do in your free time?”

会話は一方通行ではありません。自分の話をしたら、必ず相手にも話を振る習慣をつけましょう。
