Lesson Introduction

How to Give Your Opinion Politely in English at Work

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to say:

"Can I share a quick thought? I think the deadline is a bit tight, because the design phase alone will take a week. Maybe we could launch a smaller version first instead."
Chapter 1 — Practical Applications

Where Will You Use This?

Here are 6 real workplace situations where sharing your opinion politely is essential:

  • Team meetings: When you are asked to comment on a project plan or proposal.
  • 1-on-1s with manager: When discussing your workload, goals, or deadlines with your manager.
  • Email or Slack threads: When a colleague asks "What do you think?" on a project thread.
  • Brainstorming sessions: When the group is choosing between different ideas or approaches.
  • Feedback sessions: When reviewing a colleague's draft, presentation, or work.
  • Project retrospectives: When discussing what went well and what didn't after a release.

Why It Matters ·

  • Build trust without sounding blunt: If you sound too blunt, coworkers may feel criticized.
  • Get taken seriously in meetings: Clear, structured points get heard and respected.
  • Grow your career professionally: Mastering polite opinion-giving helps you advance without friction.
Chapter 2 — Core Pattern

The 3-Part Core Formula ·

Most polite opinions in English follow a simple, 3-part formula:

[Soft opener] + [Your opinion] + [Reason or suggestion]
"I think the deadline is a bit tight, because the design phase alone will take a week."

What each part does · 各パーツの役割

  • Soft opener — "I think," "In my opinion," "My honest take is..."
  • Your opinion — state your point directly.
  • Reason or suggestion — "because...", "Maybe we could... instead."

Linguistic Nuance ·

Why soft openers matter in business:
"The deadline is too tight."
"I think the deadline is a bit tight..."

Chapter 8 — Real Conversation 1 of 3

Deciding on a Launch Date in a Team Meeting ·

Read both sides aloud. Notice how the speaker uses "Can I share a quick thought?" and "What if we..." to solve a timeline problem.

Ken
We need to decide on the launch date today. What do you all think?
You
Can I share a quick thought? I think the current date might be too soon.
Ken
Really? We've been planning for this for a month already.
You
I hear you, though I have some concerns about the testing phase. It usually takes longer than we expect.
Ken
That's fair, but the client is expecting something by the end of the month.
You
What if we launched a smaller version first, and added the rest later?
Ken
A phased launch... that's actually not a bad idea.
You
From what I've seen, phased launches catch more bugs before the full release.
Ken
Okay, I'm with you on that. What would the first phase include?
You
Maybe just the core features — login, dashboard, and the main report.
Ken
That sounds doable. When could we test that piece?
You
I think we could have it ready for testing by next Wednesday.
Ken
Let's go with that plan then. I'll update the client today.
You
Great, and I'll send you the updated testing timeline this afternoon.
Ken
Perfect, thanks for pushing back on the date. It was the right call.
You
No problem, I just wanted to make sure we weren't rushing the important parts.
Chapter 9 — Real Conversation 2 of 3

A One-on-One Workload Discussion with Your Manager ·

Setting: A 1-on-1 meeting with your manager Sarah about managing your current workload.

Sarah (Manager)
How are you feeling about your current workload?
You
Honestly, my take is that it's a bit heavy right now.
Sarah (Manager)
I didn't realize that. Can you tell me more?
You
I'm juggling three projects at once, and two of them have deadlines this week.
Sarah (Manager)
That does sound like a lot. What would help?
You
One option could be moving the smaller project to next week.
Sarah (Manager)
I'm not sure the client would agree to that.
You
That's fair, but I'd push back a little — the smaller project isn't time-sensitive yet.
Sarah (Manager)
Let me check with the client and see what's possible.
You
I'd really appreciate that. It would take a lot of pressure off.

You
Maybe we could bring someone else in to review the documents, just for this week.
Sarah (Manager)
That's doable. I'll ask Tom if he has time.
You
That would help a lot. I think I'd be back on track by Friday.
Sarah (Manager)
Good, let's check in again on Friday then.
You

Chapter 10 — Real Conversation 3 of 3

Casual Chat About New Office Policy with Coworker Mia ·

Setting: A casual chat near the coffee machine about a new attendance policy.

Mia (Coworker)
Hey, did you hear about the new office policy? Three days a week now.
You
Yeah, I saw the email. My honest take is that it's a bit sudden.
Mia (Coworker)
Really? I thought people would be happy about it.
You
I see it a bit differently — a lot of people built their routines around working from home.
Mia (Coworker)
That's true, I hadn't thought about that.
You
From what I've seen, sudden changes usually cause more stress than they need to.
Mia (Coworker)
So what do you think they should have done instead?
You
Maybe they could have given us a month's notice instead of two weeks.
Mia (Coworker)
That makes a lot of sense actually.
You
Exactly what I was thinking — a bit more time would make it feel less forced.
Mia (Coworker)
Are you going to say something to HR about it?
You
I think I might, just to share the feedback. Can't hurt to ask.
Mia (Coworker)
Good idea. Want me to come with you?
You
That would help a lot, actually. Two voices are better than one.
Mia (Coworker)
Let's set up a time this week then.
You
Sounds good, I'll message you after lunch.
Chapter 11 — Sounding Natural

What Makes an Opinion Sound Natural ·

A natural opinion sounds like a real person thinking out loud. Observe the difference:

Tip 1: Add a reason or context

❌ Unnatural / Blunt
I think we should change it.
✅ Natural & Thoughtful
I think we should change it, mostly because a few people mentioned it was confusing during testing.

Tip 2: Extend agreement by naming a benefit

❌ Short / Generic
Good idea.
✅ Natural & Collaborative
That's a good idea — it would also save us a step in the review process.

Ways to extend short answers ·

  • A reason: "...because..."
  • An example: "For example, last week..."
  • A small comparison: "Compared to the last version..."
  • A follow-up question: "What do you think about...?"
Chapter 12 — Common Mistakes

Avoid these common communication mistakes in workplace English:

❌ Mistake 1 — Being too direct /
"You're wrong."
✅ Better
"I see it a bit differently, actually."
❌ Mistake 2 — Stacking too many softeners /
"Maybe, I don't know, perhaps we could possibly try..."
✅ Better
"Maybe we could try..."
❌ Mistake 3 — Giving an opinion with no reason /
"I don't think that's a good idea."
✅ Better
"I don't think that's a good idea, because it might delay the other tasks."
❌ Mistake 4 — Translating Japanese cushioning too literally /
"I think maybe it could perhaps be a little better."
✅ Better
"I think it could be a little better."
❌ Mistake 5 — Jumping straight to disagreement without acknowledging /
"But that won't work."
✅ Better
"I see your point, but I'm not sure that will work."
