Lesson Introduction

How to Introduce Yourself at Work in English

英語で仕事の自己紹介をする方法

新しい職場に入ったり、会議に参加したり、クライアントと会うとき、最初にすることは「自己紹介」です。自分の名前・仕事・担当内容を相手に伝えます。難しい英語は必要ありません。短くて明確な自己紹介が一番伝わります。

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to say:

"Hi, I'm Yuki. I work in marketing. I mainly handle social media and content planning. Nice to meet you!"
「こんにちは、ユキです。マーケティング部で働いています。主にSNS運用とコンテンツ企画を担当しています。よろしくお願いします!」
Chapter 1 — When and Why

When Do You Need to Introduce Yourself? · どんな場面で使う?

Here are 5 common situations where you will introduce yourself in English:

  • Starting a new job — meeting your new teammates for the first time.
    新しい職場で、初めてチームメンバーに会うとき。
  • Joining an online or in-person meeting — especially when not everyone knows you.
    オンライン・対面会議に参加するとき。特に初対面の人がいる場合。
  • Meeting a client or business partner — making a good first impression is important.
    クライアントやビジネスパートナーと初めて会うとき。第一印象がとても大切です。
  • Attending a training or workshop — you often introduce yourself at the start.
    研修やワークショップに参加するとき。最初に自己紹介をすることが多いです。
  • Networking events or business parties — when you meet many people in a short time.
    懇親会やビジネスパーティーで、短い時間に多くの人と会うとき。

Why Is This Important for English Learners? · 英語学習者に大切な理由

  • Make a good first impression: 良い第一印象を与える
  • Sound confident and professional: 自信があり、プロらしく聞こえる
  • Start conversations more easily: 会話を始めやすくなる
  • Build trust with colleagues and clients: 同僚やクライアントとの信頼関係を築く
自己紹介はあなたについて相手が最初に聞くことです。自然で明確な自己紹介ができると、良い第一印象を与え、自信のあるプロとして見てもらえます。会話のきっかけにもなり、同僚やクライアントとの信頼関係づくりにも役立ちます。
Chapter 2 — Core Language Pattern

The Core Language Pattern · 基本の言い方

Use this simple 3-sentence template every time to introduce yourself confidently:

"Hi, I'm [Name]. I work in [Department/Role]. I mainly handle [Task/Responsibility]."
「こんにちは、[名前]です。[部署・役職]で働いています。主に[担当業務]を担当しています。」

What each part means · 各パーツの意味

  • "Hi, I'm [Name]." — This is your greeting and name. Simple and friendly.
    挨拶と名前です。シンプルで親しみやすいです。
  • "I work in [Department/Role]." — This tells people where you belong in the company.
    会社のどの部署や役職にいるかを伝えます。
  • "I mainly handle [Task]." — This tells people what you do every day. "Mainly" sounds natural and professional.
    毎日何をしているかを伝えます。"mainly"(主に)という言葉を使うと自然でプロらしく聞こえます。

Polite Closing Lines · 締めの言葉

  • "Nice to meet you." — casual and friendly / カジュアルで親しみやすい
  • "It's a pleasure to meet you." — more formal / よりフォーマル
  • "I look forward to working with you." — great for new colleagues / 新しい同僚に最適
最後に丁寧な締めの言葉を加えることができます。カジュアルな場面では "Nice to meet you."、フォーマルな場面では "It's a pleasure to meet you."、新しい同僚には "I look forward to working with you." がよく使われます。

Chapter 11 — Naturalness Tips

How to Sound More Natural · 自然に聞こえるコツ

Small tweaks make a huge difference in professional introductions. Compare the "Before" and "After" examples below:

Tip 1: Describing Duties Simply

❌ Unnatural / Flat
I do social media.
✅ Natural / Professional
I mainly handle social media.
「I mainly handle」を使うと、より丁寧でビジネスにふさわしい響きになります。

Tip 2: Inviting Questions

❌ Too blunt
Ask me if you want.
✅ Polite & Businesslike
Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
「Please feel free to」は職場で非常に好まれる温かく丁寧な表現です。

Tip 3: Avoiding Repetitive Sentences

❌ Repetitive
I am responsible for reports. I am also responsible for budgets.
✅ Concise
I mainly handle reports and budget planning.
同じ語彙(responsible for)を何回も繰り返さず、一文でまとめてスッキリ伝えましょう。

Tip 4: Correct Department Usage

❌ Literal translation
My job is sales department person.
✅ Standard English
I work in sales. or I'm on the sales team.
「〜部の人間です」を直訳しようとせず、標準的な「I work in [department]」を使ってください。

How to Extend a Short Answer · 短い答えを長くする方法

  • Add a detail about your role: "I mainly handle social media — so a lot of writing and scheduling."
    担当内容の具体的な説明を加える。
  • Say how long you've been there: "I've been on the team for about two years now."
    在籍期間を加える。
  • Add an invitation to connect: "If you ever need help with anything on the marketing side, just ask!"
    相手に話しかけやすくする一言を加える。
  • Show enthusiasm: "I'm really excited to be working on this project."
    ポジティブな一言を加えると印象がよくなります。
Chapter 12 — Common Mistakes

5 Mistakes to Avoid · 避けるべき5つのこと

Check if you make any of these common introduction errors often made by Japanese learners:

❌ Mistake 1 — Making the introduction too long
"Hi, I'm Yuki. I work in marketing. I do social media, content planning, email newsletters, blog writing, and I also help with events sometimes, and last year I worked on a campaign that was..."
✅ Better
"Hi, I'm Yuki. I work in marketing — I mainly handle social media and content planning."
仕事の自己紹介は短くシンプルにしましょう。詳細な業務の羅列は相手を疲れさせます。詳しい話は後から会話の中で行えば十分です。
❌ Mistake 2 — Forgetting to say your role or department
"Hi, I'm Ken. Nice to meet you." (What does Ken do? We don't know.)
✅ Better
"Hi, I'm Ken. I work in sales. Nice to meet you."
名前だけでなく、「何を担当している人なのか」を付け足してください。そうすることで相手が仕事上どう関われるかが分かります。
❌ Mistake 3 — Using the wrong formality level
Saying "Yo, I'm Ken" to a new client.
✅ Better
"Good afternoon, my name is Ken Tanaka." (to a client)
クライアントや社外のフォーマルな場面では、"Good morning/afternoon" やフルネームを。新しいチームメンバーなどのフランクな場面では "Hi / Hey" で十分です。
❌ Mistake 4 — Translating directly from Japanese
"I am marketing department's person." (Literal translation of 「マーケティング部の人間です」)
✅ Better
"I work in marketing." or "I'm on the marketing team."
日本語の言い回しをそのまま英単語に置き換えると不自然な響きになります。よく使われる決まり文句で丸ごと覚えましょう。
❌ Mistake 5 — Not having a closing line
Stopping abruptly right after stating your core job responsibility.
✅ Better
Always end with: "Nice to meet you" or "I look forward to working with you."
仕事内容を言い終えた後、ぶつりと自己紹介を切ると冷たい印象を与えます。必ず丁寧な締めの挨拶で締めくくりましょう。
