1. Introduction /

Talking about your weaknesses in English is one of the most common parts of a job interview. It feels uncomfortable for many people — not just Japanese learners. But this question is not a trap. It is actually a great chance to show that you are honest, mature, and always improving.

Why does this matter? /

In English-speaking work culture, being able to name a weakness honestly — and explain how you are fixing it — is a sign of emotional intelligence. It tells the other person: "I know myself. I take responsibility. I keep growing." This is exactly what employers and colleagues respect.

2. Core Language Pattern /

Use this 3-part structure for any weakness question. It is safe, professional, and natural.

  1. Step 1One area I'm working on is [weakness].
  2. Step 2It can sometimes affect [situation].
  3. Step 3I'm improving it by [action], and I've already seen progress.

One-Sentence Shortcut / 1

"One area I'm working on is [weakness], which can sometimes affect [situation]."
Example: "One area I'm working on is perfectionism, which can sometimes affect how I manage my time."

Breaking It Down / 各パートの解説

"One area I'm working on is..." softens the word "weakness" and sounds more confident and professional than "My weakness is...". "It can sometimes affect..." — the word "sometimes" is important, since it shows this does not happen all the time. "I'm improving it by..." should always end with an action, which is the most important part.

「One area I'm working on is...」 「It can sometimes affect...」 「I'm improving it by...」

5. Three Example Conversations / 3

Conversation 1: Job Interview — Talking with a Recruiter

Setting: A formal job interview at a company office. Recruiter: James.

JamesSo, tell me — what's one weakness you're currently working on?
YouOne area I'm working on is perfectionism. I sometimes spend too much time checking small details before I feel ready to share my work.
JamesI see. How does that affect your day-to-day work?
YouIt can slow me down a little, especially when I'm close to a deadline. I'm aware of it now, so I'm working on it.
JamesWhat are you doing to improve?
YouI've started setting time limits for each task — for example, thirty minutes to review a document, and then I move on. It's really helped.
JamesThat sounds like a very mature approach. Has it made a difference?
YouYes, definitely. I've already seen a big improvement in how I manage my time, and my work output has increased too.

Conversation 2: Performance Review — Talking with Your Manager

Setting: An annual performance review at the office. Manager: Sarah.

SarahOverall, you've had a strong year. Is there anything you feel you want to improve going forward?
YouYes, actually. One area I've been thinking about is public speaking. I sometimes feel nervous when I present to the whole team.
SarahThat's interesting. What kind of nervousness do you feel?
YouMainly I speak too fast when I'm nervous. I think it makes it harder for everyone to follow along.
SarahHave you done anything to address that?
YouYes. I've been practicing presentations in front of a mirror, and I joined a presentation skills workshop last month. I'm also asking for feedback after team meetings now.
SarahThat's great to hear. It sounds like you're being very proactive about it.
YouI really want to improve. I think confident presenting will help me contribute more in client meetings too.

Conversation 3: Networking Event — Talking with a New Contact

Setting: A casual professional networking event. New Contact: Emma.

EmmaSo, what kind of things are you focusing on for your professional development right now?
YouHonestly, I'm working on being better at asking for help. I used to try to solve everything by myself, which sometimes slowed me down.
EmmaOh, really? A lot of people have that tendency. What made you realize it was something to work on?
YouMy old manager pointed it out. She said I was sometimes reinventing the wheel when a colleague could have helped in five minutes.
EmmaThat's a really common trap. What are you doing differently now?
YouI now try to give myself a time limit — if I can't solve something in thirty minutes, I ask. It's made a huge difference to my productivity.
EmmaThat's a really practical approach. I might steal that idea!
YouPlease do! It sounds simple, but it was a big mindset shift for me.

I've already seen progress — for example, last month I saved two hours by asking a colleague early.""
