Where Will You Use This? · いつ使うのか

Here are 5 real situations where you will need to ask for directions:

  • At the airport: When you land in a new city and need to find the taxi stand, the train, or the exit.
    空港に着いて、タクシー乗り場や電車の出口がわからないとき。
  • In a city centre: When you are walking and cannot find your hotel, a recommended restaurant, or a landmark.
    街の中心部で、ホテルや有名なスポットが見つからないとき。
  • Using public transport: When you are at a bus stop or train station and are not sure which platform or bus to take.
    バス停や駅で、どのホームやバスに乗ればいいかわからないとき。
  • In a shopping area: When you are looking for a specific shop, a pharmacy, or a supermarket inside a shopping centre.

A good direction question has three parts. Use this simple template every time. この3つのパーツを使うだけで、好印象を与えながら確実に道を聞くことができます。

"Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to [place]? Is it far from here? Thank you so much. I really appreciate it."
「すみません、[場所]への行き方を教えていただけますか。ここから遠いですか。本当にありがとうございます。感謝します。」

What each part does · 各パーツの役割

  • Get attention politely — "Excuse me,"
    相手の注意を丁寧に引く。いきなり質問するより印象がずっと良くなります。
  • Ask your question clearly — "could you tell me how to get to [place]?"
    目的地への行き方を分かりやすく伝えます。
  • Thank the person — "Thank you so much!"
    感謝の気持ちを伝えることで、お互いに気持ち良く終えられます。
Why "could you" is better than "can you":
"Can you tell me...?" sounds a little too direct (少し直接的).
"Could you tell me...?" sounds polite and respectful. It is perfect for strangers (丁寧で、初対面の見知らぬ人に聞くのに最適です).

Many learners can ask a simple question. But natural speakers do a little more. Compare the difference below.

Tip 1: Add a reason or context · 状況をひとこと加える

Excuse me, I'm trying to find the museum — could you point me in the right direction?
理由や状況をひとこと加えると、不躾（ぶしつけ）にならずに、とても親しみやすい印象になります。

Tip 2: Confirm what you heard · 繰り返して確認する

「So...」で始めて聞いた道順を繰り返すと、聞き違いを防げます。

5 Mistakes to Avoid · よくある5つの間違い

Japanese learners often make these mistakes when asking for directions. Check if you make any of these!

❌ Mistake 1 — Starting without "Excuse me"
"Where is the station?"

"Excuse me, where is the station?"
いきなり質問から入ると唐突で失礼に聞こえます。必ず「Excuse me」で始めましょう。日本語の「すみません」と同じ役割です。
❌ Mistake 2 — Using "please" instead of "could you"
"Tell me the way to the hotel, please."

"Could you tell me the way to the hotel?"
「〜please」で命令文を結ぶのは少し命令口調（指示）に近く聞こえます。「Could you〜」を使って尋ねる方がずっと丁寧です。
❌ Mistake 3 — Saying nothing when you don't understand
(Smiling and nodding when you actually have no idea what they said)
