How to Talk About Your Daily Routine
Talking about your daily routine is one of the most useful skills in everyday English — it comes up in self-introductions, small talk with friends, and even job interviews. You don't need complicated vocabulary, just a short, clear, natural way to describe your day.
By the end of this guide you'll be able to say something like: "I wake up at 6:30 a.m. In the morning, I take a shower and have a quick breakfast. During the day, I work at an office. In the evening, I cook dinner and watch TV. I go to bed at 11 p.m."
When Will You Use This?
- Self-introductions — people often ask "What do you usually do?" or "What does your day look like?"
- At work — a colleague or manager may ask about your schedule or how you start your day.
- Small talk with friends — sharing daily routines is an easy, natural topic to keep conversations alive.
- Travelling / exchanges — new people or language exchange partners will ask what your life is like back home.
- Job interviews — you may be asked about your work habits and how you organize your day.
Why It Matters
- A clear routine story makes you sound confident and fluent —
- It's one of the easiest topics to prepare in advance, since your day rarely changes —
- Describing your day naturally opens the door to follow-up questions and longer conversations —
The Simple Template
You only need a few short sentences. Structure your day using these five chronological blocks — you don't have to use all five every time; two or three is fine.
- "I wake up at..." → give your exact starting time (e.g., 7 a.m.)
- "In the morning, I..." → one or two activities before midday
- "During the day, I..." → your main action — work, study, part-time job
- "In the evening, I..." → how you relax, cook dinner, spend free time
- "I go to bed at..." → end naturally with your usual sleep time
Template
In the morning, I [morning activity].
During the day, I [daytime activity].
In the evening, I [evening activity].
I go to bed at [time].
